People who defend corporal punishment aren't good people, they're authoritarian / believe children are their property to be arbitrarily commanded and beaten to conform to their will, they're not sensitive to others' pain / are discompassionate enough to believe in 'tough love' (when most of the time it's not even that, it's just about what's convenient for the parent), they don't have the perspective or the will to step back and look at the matter objectively and see that it boils down to violence against children, and they haven't bothered to read the multitude of studies on the various negative psychological effects corporal punishment (with virtually no positive effects) or they choose to ignore them.
